Keep your Speed

  • Unless stated otherwise, the maximum limit of all roads in Hong Kong is 50 km/h.
  • Keeping your speed at 50 km/h can reduce the severity of any injury to your car's occupants in a collision.
  • The most efficient fuel consumption of most cars is at 70-80 km/h.
  • Keeping your speed at 100-110 km/h is burning twice as much fuel when compared with 70-80 km/h, whilst the speed is only faster by 30-40 km/h.
Vehicle Lights

  • Law states that you must switch on the headlamps during the hours of darkness & in poor visibility conditions.
  • Hours of darkness means 15 minutes after sunset to 15 minutes before sunrise.
  • Although there is no definition of poor visibility conditions, it is always safer to switch on the lights.
  • Law states that for 4-wheeled vehicles, a minimum of 2 front lamps, 2 headlamps, 2 rear lamps and 1 license plate lamp.
Parking on Slope

  • Law states that all vehicles must use handbrake to park.
  • When parked uphill, you should engage first gear and turn front wheels to the right with kerb but to the left without kerb.
  • When parked downhill, you should engage reverse gear and turn front wheels to the left.
  • You should use wheel chocks for added safety.
2-Sec Rule

  • You must take at least 1 second to react to danger and another second to brake to stop the car in any emergency.
  • 2-Sec Rule is the minimum requirement for driving.
  • 2-Sec Rule can only apply when the speed is at or lower than 70 km/h.
  • If you drive at a higher speed, 3 or even 4 sec is needed.
  • When road surface is wet, a longer time is needed.
Multilane Roundabout

  • If your exit is the first one, you should choose the left lane and the outer circle and exit immediately.
  • If your exit is any exit other than the first one, you should choose the right lane and the inner circle.
  • You should signal left after passing through the exit before your intended one and watch out for traffic on the outer circle; then you can leave.
Corner

  • You should always slow down and engage a lower gear when approaching a bend.
  • You should assess the sharpness of the bend and adjust your speed accordingly.
  • For a left bend, you must keep slightly to the right to increase line of vision and vise versa for the right bend.
  • You should never make harsh braking and steering movements while in the bend.
Seat Belt

  • You and the passengers must be properly belted whenever a seat belt is installed in the vehicle.
  • The safety belt will not prevent injuries but will effectively reduce the severity of any injuries.
  • You should not use any device to loosen the belt to enhance comfort.
  • If you fail to buckle up, compensation in a civil claim for injuries may be reduced.
Airbag

  • Both airbags and safety seat belt are vital in case of a collision.
  • Airbags are prefixed with the abbreviation ‘SRS' (Supplemental Restraint System) to indicate its secondary protective action.
  • You and your passengers must fasten seat belts to avoid severe injuries caused by exploding airbag. For any unrestrained front seat occupant, the exploding airbag may in fact cause severe injuries.
  • You should not let children to sit in the front as they may be hurt by the exploding airbag even if belted.
Breakdown

  • When there is car breakdown or tyre puncture, you should never stop abruptly on the carriageway, especially on the outer lane on high speed roads.
  • You must switch on the hazard warning lights immediately.
  • You should steer as far as possible to inner lane or hard shoulder when there is one on a flat road.
  • You and your passengers must immediately vacate the vehicle and remain outside the crash barrier if there is any.
  • You must place a reflective triangle warning sign upstream to alert vehicles coming from behind.
Rain Fog

  • Low visibility makes you more difficult ‘to see' the traffic clearly, as well as difficult ‘to be seen' by other road-users, including pedestrians.
  • You should switch on your headlamps even in daytime.
  • You should not switch to high beam continuously.
  • You should switch on the hazard warning lights in extreme weather to increase alertness of other road-users.
